Vimukthi Jayasundara est né à Ratnapura en 1977. Il a d’abord été journaliste et critique de films. Après son premier film, un documentaire, The land of Silence, il a été étudiant au Fresnoy ‒ studio national des arts contemporains, puis résident à la Cinéfondation du festival de Cannes en 2003. Son premier long métrage, La Terre abandonnée, remporte la Caméra d’or au Festival de Cannes en 2005. Ahasin Wetei (Between Two Worlds), son deuxième long métrage, est sélectionné en compétition internationale à la Mostra de Venise en 2009, et Chatrak (Mushrooms) a été présenté à la Quinzaine des Réalisateurs à Cannes en 2011.

Born in 1977 in Sri Lanka, Vimukthi Jayasundara studied at the prestigious French school of contemporary art – Le Fresnoy. His first feature film Abandoned Land won the Golden Camera Award at the 2005 Cannes Festival. His second film Between Two Worlds was in the official competition of the 2009 Venice Festival. His third film Mushrooms was screened at the premiere of Directors’ Fortnight at the 2011 Cannes Festival. His latest film Dark in the White Light was screened at the premiere of the 2015 Locarno Festival. Jayasundara lives in both Paris and Colombo.
His work speaks from the borders: those that separate a country from another, modern cities from ancestral land, and the threshold between the living and the dead. And from there, it erases the borders between fiction and documentary, between cinema and visual arts, expanding the very limits of filmmaking, generating hypnotic visions, pictures of great plastic beauty, and situations that go from the surreal to the humoristic. Un jeune moine bouddhiste se met à la recherche de vérités spirituelles. Un étudiant, voulant devenir docteur, tente l’expérience de ses limites. Un trafiquant d’organes développe ses affaires dans l’indifférence et la moiteur de Colombo. Un chirurgien, accompagné de son serviteur qui lui fait office de chauffeur, soigne le jour et la nuit, viole des femmes. Sous forme de conte philosophique, le film entrecroise plusieurs histoires de corps en perdition, aux confins de la douleur, entre la vie et la mort.

Sri Lankan auteur Vimukthi Jayasundara’s dark and brooding film charts dangerous territory as he tells the story of a doctor, who may well save lives while on duty but after hours sets about raping and assaulting young women. There are clear links to classical horror tales – whether it is the vampire myth of the Jekyll and Hyde story – but Jayasundara pushes the envelope in terms of screen violence and dangerous morality. There are other strands to the storyline – from a novice monk to an organ trafficker – but at the dark core of the film is the doctor who can no longer control his desires of sex and blood. [diff.ae]

Dans un pays jamais nommé, un jeune homme semble tomber du ciel directement dans la mer et s'échoue sur le rivage. Il se retrouve errant dans les rues d'une ville inconnue jonchées de postes de télévision et d'écrans d'ordinateur abandonnés par des émeutiers. Sous ses yeux, des hommes armés de bâtons en attaquent un autre habillé d'un costume de Mickey. Plus tard, l'inconnu tombé du ciel vient au secours d'une jeune femme et parvient à la mettre à l'abri dans la jungle. Parallèlement, deux pêcheurs se racontent la légende du prince qui se cacha dans le tronc creux d'un arbre pour survivre.
Le cinéaste srilankais Vimukthi Jayasundara a remporté la Caméra d'or à Cannes en 2005 pour son premier long métrage, La terre abandonnée, qui traitait de la guerre civile ensanglantant son pays. Ce deuxième film, plus impénétrable, construit sur des séquences poétiques qui sont autant de tableaux symboliques, s'inspire du Mahavamsa, une histoire en vers des rois légendaires de Ceylan. A modern myth or legend. Director Vimukthi Jayasundara interprets current Sri Lanka by comparing it to mythology. Halfway through the film, two fishermen discuss a legend about two kings who execute all the young men in their country to kill the prince who is a threat to them. Although this is only a legend, it is a story about a horrible massacre. Today, a similar situation permeates Sri Lanka, no, actually all parts of the world experience this. A young man who falls from the sky leaves the city rampant with violence to the countryside, but all able bodied men have disappeared. The situation in the legend continues to this day. Even though the young man fell from the sky, he cannot save anyone and must continue to run away. The ending of the legend is not expressed, but surely, the prince survives, kills the tyrant king and becomes a respected king. But in the reality within the film, the young man hides inside a tree and becomes one with the tree. Thus reality and legend is strangely conjoined in Between Two Worlds. [biff.kr]

Sur une terre entre guerre et paix, dans une atmosphère étrange et confuse, des corps s'attirent, des assassins sont rongés par la culpabilité, des soldats s'abrutissent en manœuvres ineptes, les légendes ressurgissent. Seule l'enfance conserve l’innocence en cette terre abandonnée des dieux.
Le réalisateur raconte des histoires non pas d'une façon classique avec de l'action et des rebondissements, mais à la manière d'un poème où les plans remplaceraient les mots. Sunrise. A lone tank drives into a suspiciously quiet war zone: a tiny rural hamlet, inhabited by just one family. For more than 30 years, Sri Lanka was ravaged by a civil war between government troops and the 'Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam'.
There is no peace in The Forsaken Land. A fragile ceasefire seems to be in effect, but fresh fighting could break out at any moment. Loosely structured scenes from the everyday life of the family pass by in this void, constant tension and stalemate. Far from civilisation, surrounded by lush palm trees and pools of blood, the members of the family are caught in a suffocating atmosphere characterised by cruelty, desperation and absurdity.
This unusual feature debut by Jayasundara won the Camera d'Or at Cannes. He then continued to examine the wounds left by this struggle in his subsequent films. [iffr.com]
